I mean, who wouldn’t want to see an Easter Bunny dramatically crash through a church? “New Year's Evil” (1980) On the last day of the old year, an anonymous caller informs the host of a live broadcast event. He says that he’s going to off a person every time the clock hits midnight in each US time zone. Yikes. This is definitely not how the protagonist thought she’d ring in the new year. Despite the gory parts, we can’t help but vibe with the holiday spirit. Seeing the characters decked out in glitter and dancing the night away fully embodies what this day is all about. If you want to get in the mood to pop some bubbly, look no further than this! “Happy Death Day” (2017) Birthday You either love them or hate them. Luckily for Tree, she can experience all the feels by reliving her special day over and over again. Unfortunately, she also keeps getting murdered by someone wearing a baby face mask. Okay…hating her birthday is totally understandable now. Somehow, she still manages to spin the situation in her favor by doing whatever the heck she wants. This is a great reminder that even if your day doesn’t go as planned, you can still celebrate in other ways. It’s YOUR day, so you get to decide what goes down. And if things aren’t perfect? Don’t be afraid of a do-over. advertisement “All Souls Day: Dia de los Muertos” (2005) Day of the Dead What is typically seen as a joyful celebration turns sinister when a group of college kids visit a town overrun by zombies. The supernatural creatures require a human sacrifice every year and decide these visitors will be their next pick. The movie stays true to the major themes of this holiday such as offerings and pleasing the deceased. Yet, the creepy spin on it makes it a new way to appreciate the festivities. What better way to bond with loved ones during this period than watching this flick with them? “April Fool’s Day” (1986) April Fools' Day This is the one day of the year, jokesters can run wild! No wonder the college kids in this movie are so excited to vacation during this time. It’s all fun and games until bodies start showing up! This slasher is full of pranks that keep you guessing. Will it be a silly little game? Or will it result in something more evil? Until the very end, you feel just as surprised as the characters. This is both a horror movie and a thriller. If you enjoy the uncertainty that April Fools’ Day brings, this movie will give you just that. “Leprechaun” (1993) St. Patrick’s Day It’s already hard enough to take leprechauns seriously, let alone in this rendition. Although this film was written as a regular horror movie, Warwick Davis, who plays the evil little rascal, infuses so much humor into this role that it ended up becoming a comedy horror. The story of a leprechaun set on getting his stolen gold back by any means necessary is a cult classic for a reason! Why else would it have spawned an eight-movie franchise, including our personal favorite of the bunch, “Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood”? “ThanksKilling” (2007) Thanksgiving If there’s something we should be thankful for, it’s this movie being created. An evil turkey coincidentally named Turkie haunts a couple of uni students in this black comedy. The punny title and character names pretty much tells you everything you need to know. Let’s be honest. Lots of horror movies take themselves way too seriously, which is why this is so refreshing! Thanksgiving is all about having a great time with your loved ones. Why not watch this while chowing down at dinner – though maybe not while eating a turkey. We don’t want to upset any evil birds, right? Valentine’s Day Love isn’t the only thing in the air. Romance is cute and all, but sometimes we want to switch it up! There’s a bunch of ways to celebrate including focusing on the dark side of this holiday. When a town throws a Valentine’s Day dance despite warnings not to, bloodshed ensues. Delivering body parts in candy boxes? Check. Cutting out people’s hearts? Check. The combo of light-hearted themes paired with the gruesome gore makes it a unique way to spend the day. Horror movie buffs are in for a sweet treat with this cinematic slay! “Black Christmas” (1974) Christmas Ho, Ho, Ho. ‘Tis the season for scary films. Whether it’s the satirical genius of “Krampus” or the fact that “Gremlins” is as much a comedy as a horror movie, the options are limitless! But the original “Black Christmas” is the best gift we could've asked for. The story of a sorority receiving anonymous threats quickly became a cult favorite. So much so that it had two remakes, including the epic 2019 version with the same name. This picture dives deeper than others in this genre by touching on feminist issues. It’s also considered one of the first slashers to ever exist. “Halloween” (1978) Halloween Classic isn’t a strong enough word to describe this film. Fifteen years after committing a horrible crime, the infamous Michael Myers returns to his hometown to find his new targets. Many critics say it’s the most important scary movie ever created. With the plot taking place during Halloween, there’s no separating this flick from the spooky season. The impact it has had on both the holiday and the horror genre is immeasurable. Let’s take a moment to acknowledge the masterpiece that is the music score. Yes, it’s a 13-movie franchise now, but we can never forget the first one!
