Pixar And Khan Academy Want To Teach You The Art Of Storytelling For Free

One of the biggest points stressed in Pixar President Edwin Catmull's book Creativity, Inc. is that they never compromise storytelling, regardless of how long and difficult the journey to completion is. As we now know, staying true to that mentality has really paid off.

When the team nervously screened an early project, they were shocked at the overwhelmingly positive reception they received, despite the incomplete renders that came about halfway through the film. They credit this positive reaction to their storytelling ability, and now they want to teach you their ways.

Pixar has teamed up with the people that got me through Organic Chemistry I&II: The brilliant leaders over at Khan Academy. This project, which goes by the name "Pixar In A Box" covers a diverse range of film and animation topics, all for free. So far, they've covered the more technical aspects of film production and creation with courses in animation, virtual cameras, rendering, and more.

Of course, you can have all the technical prowess in the world, but if you can't properly tell a story, then no one is going to want to see your movie. This exact scenario is what their latest installment in the series covers.

You can get started with basic lessons in character and set development before the next installment is released, which will be teaching us how to develop a character from the ground up, storyboarding, and beyond. As everyone familiar with Khan Academy knows, the system makes it easy to repeat lessons on your time and learn at your own pace, so you can develop your skills and education without sacrificing valuable other time at your job, school, or personal life.

I'm starting the lessons myself and look forward to doing the late night talk show circuit with Tom Hanks soon enough.
