Restaurant Gets Slammed For Forcing Wait Staff To Sign This Ridiculous Employee 'Agreement'

My father worked in the restaurant business for years and if there's one thing I know about the food industry is that it is never, ever, ever easy. Even if you do manage to turn a profit one year, even if there's no shortage of customers, and even if you find employees who are on time, reliable, and good at their jobs, the work at the end of the day is still extremely difficult.

You're on your feet all day, you're dealing with hundreds upon hundreds of people and the stress of making sure each individual experience is perfect is exhausting.

And getting to that level is even more tiring, so running a tight ship is the key to success in any business, especially when it comes to dining.

So I can almost understand where this post from Reddit user 00generic is coming from, almost.

Not sure where to post. My cousins job just asked her to sign this and fired an employee who refused.

But to go so far as to dock a waiter or waitress, jobs that are already tough and rely heavily on tips, is borderline criminal. In fact, it might just be criminal; I can't think of a single labor law that would support this kind of behavior from an employer.

People began pointing out just how petty the agreement was.

This company must be in financial ruin if they need to scrimp on straws to save money.

Others offered some pretty solid advice for anyone presented with a form like this from their employer.

"The answer to this is: "Let me ask my lawyer before I sign this."

Different states have different labor laws, and cash docks can happen, but usually not for poor performance. There are some general federal guidelines as well, but once employees start getting docked money, then they're considered hourly employees and are entitled to overtime pay, which can, in the end, be worse for the employer.
