This 1lb Preemie Baby Fought Like Hell To Make It Home For Christmas

If you want to talk about amazing Christmas presents, it's pretty much impossible to top that time you tore open a box and saw that Super Nintendo staring at you, with its two controllers and Super Mario World cartridge packaged right in the box.

And I remember when I was growing up when my biggest problems were trying to hide my crappy math test grade from my dad and hoping my parents would be able to afford that video game I really, really wanted.

But for lots of people, priorities change. Like for Melissa Berretti and Scott McCubbin who just wanted their little baby Sofia to come home safe and sound.

Because Sofia was born at an alarmingly tiny 1lb.

The Daily Record reported that all they wanted for Christmas was their baby home, and after spending 103 days in pre-natal care they got their wish: two days before her due date!

"I can’t believe we have her home for Christmas. It is amazing. That is all we wished for," Melissa told The Daily Record.

She went on to talk about what it was like the day Sofia was born. For starters, Melissa didn't even know she was in labor - just that she had "tummy problems". After going in for a check-up, the doctors saw she was 9cm dilated and she pushed Sofia out. They quickly whisked her baby girl away.

Which was a very traumatizing experience for the new mom.

"We were both in tears. The doctors just whisked her away. I felt so helpless as she was in an incubator. I blamed myself and kept thinking: ‘She should be in my belly and still growing’.

It was so hard as I couldn’t hold her for four weeks and could only touch her hand."

Sofia's dad, a 28-year-old mechanic, was amazed by how hard his daughter fought back to health, especially considering her odds.

"They told us she had a 50/50 chance of survival. I could have sat her in my palm she was so tiny. But I couldn’t believe how much she moved about – she was always kicking off her blankets."

But although Sofia contracted an infection at a week old and was "the sickest baby in the ward" at one point, she still managed to pull through.

It's amazing how human beings, before we know anything really, still know how to fight for our lives with tooth and nail. You can read more about baby Sofia and her parents at The Daily Record.
